Novell Moves On Linux

Novell, which became a Linux player with the acquisition of
SUSE<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=5127>several
quarters ago, has made a number of related moves indicating its
intention to pursue the business market for Linux.

Firstly, Novell took a more aggressive
stance<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=6769>in the
ongoing intellectual property (IP) legal
disputes <http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=6342> over open
source by going after
SCO<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=6455>,
the company that
claims<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=5373>to have
bought Unix rights from Novell several years ago.

SCO's willingness to sue just about every
company<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=4976>who was
using or selling Linux without having paid SCO a licensing fee has
long been at least a slight drag on the adoption of Linux by traditionally
risk-averse businesses. Novell wants to put this issue, which has dragged on
longer than the merits of the case appear to warrant, to bed.

Secondly, Novell has appointed Susan Heystee the new president of Novell
North America. One of Heystee's first actions after the appointment was to
issue a statement prioritizing Linux as the next frontier for networking
pioneer Novell, whose traditional markets were
squeezed<http://www.line56.com/articles/default.asp?NewsID=3747>by
TCP/IP. "Novell is well positioned in growth markets with our Linux
and
identity management solutions. We have a great opportunity to help customers
leverage the power and value of open source," Heystee stated.

Finally, Novell put out the second service pack for SUSE Linux Enterprise
Server 9, adding in security and maintenance upgrades as well as software
for better server clustering and consolidation.

Novell has made these moves in just a couple of days, so that's an
indication that the company is finally making a coordinated effort, as part
of a larger strategy, to more aggressively pursue the open source
opportunity.
