CDC Updates, February 2005
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention frequently updates its Web resources so that you as a health-care provider stay in the know. Recent updates include a weekly report of late-season flu activity, which details the increase in U.S. cases Jan. 16–22 (at 15.8% of testing specimens) and the number of patient visits related to flu-like illnesses as above the national baseline. For more details about flu activity, including weekly U.S. flu reports, activity maps and international flu surveillance, visit www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/. The CDC has also updated its pages with a new resource for tsunami survivors who are at increased risk of contracting one of four closely related viruses that cause mosquito-borne diseases, which result in more than 100 million cases worldwide each year. The new document defines the difference between dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever and provides directives on treatment and prevention. For details, visit www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/tsunamis/pdf/dengueqa.pdf. Also available are updated pages on anthrax, at www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/anthrax/faq/  and avian flu for travellers to Asia, particularly Vietnam, at www.cdc.gov/travel/other/avian_flu_vietnam_2005_travelers.htm.
