Brewing National Debate: Move EMS from DOT to DHS?
http://www.jems.com/jems/exclus05/e0503a.html
A Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) task force urges the reallocation of EMS from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), placing the profession alongside its fire service and law enforcement counterparts. Along with the advised creation of a U.S. EMS Administration, the task force maintains that this shift would establish a more integrated and organized voice for EMS and other first responders. For details and to download the HSPI report and press release, click here.

Hazmat as a Mechanism of Injury
By Kristina Kreutzer, PhD, NREMT-B
http://www.jems.com/jems/exclus05/e0503b.html
Because chemicals have a variety of effects on people, the exact mechanism of action of a given substance may not be completely understood for an injury caused by hazardous materials. However, prehospital providers can follow the DOT hazardous materials classifications to predict probable patterns of injury and to allow for a more thorough patient assessment and treatment. Download the ARF Featured in May JEMS
http://www.jems.com/jems/exclus05/pdf/arf.pdf
The May issue of JEMS includes the feature article, "True to Form, by David W. Ross, DO, FACEP, Dale Kuykendall, NREMT-P, Loy A. Osburn, NREMT-P, and Mark B. Homan, BS, NREMT-P. The article describes how American Medical Response (AMR), Colorado Springs, Colo., valued formal input from receiving physicians regarding patients intubated in the field as an important piece of the quality-assurance puzzle. One of the authors (Homan) devised the Airway Report Form (ARF) that is described in the article and now available for download. The ARF improved prehospital airway care and hospital communications for AMR in Colorado Springs, and it can enhance the relationship between your crews and agency medical director, as well between your agency and receiving physicians. To download a PDF version of the ARF, click here.

Laerdal Recalls Adapter Cable for Certain Defibrillators
http://www.jems.com/jems/exclus05/e0503c.html
Laerdal Medical Corp. announced last week a voluntarily recall of all lots of CM 100-Heartstart Adapter Cable, Cat. No. 920650. The company advises discontinued use of the adapter cable due to possible breakage of wires within it that may prevent delivery of defibrillation shocks. For details, click here.
