Advisory: Fentanyl Overdoses
The FDA recently issued a public health advisory on the reports of death and other serious adverse effects from overdoses of fentanyl in patients using fentanyl transdermal patches, both the brand name product Duragesic and the generic product. The advisory reminds health-care providers to be cautious when using this potent analgesic. Read the MedWatch safety summary, including links to the Public Health Advisory, Healthcare Professional and Patient Information Sheets, and the Drug Information Page at www.fda.gov/medwatch/SAFETY/2005/safety05.htm#Fentanyl. For more information on fentanyl patch abuse, read “Drug Abusers OD on Fentanyl Patches” at www.jems.com/jems/exclus04/e0404h.html.
