The American Heart Association and the American Red Cross co-founded
the First Aid Science Advisory Board for the purpose of reviewing and
evaluating peer-reviewed, published First Aid science. This process
will culminate with the Consensus on Science for First Aid with
Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) Conference in January 2005. The
First Aid CoSTR Conference will represent the scientific consensus of
nationally and internationally recognized experts in First Aid from a
variety of disciplines and organizations.
What is the purpose of the evidence evaluation process?
The endpoint of this process is the preparation of the Consensus on
Science for First Aid with Treatment Recommendations. In addition,
this process should highlight areas for future scientific research.

How is the work divided?
At least two recognized experts from different organizations review
each topic, with specific minimum database requirements for every
search strategy, including: Medline, EMBase, and Cochrane Systematic
Reviews. Every reviewer rates the level and quality of evidence using
a standardized evidence evaluation form.
Once the evidence evaluation form is completed, it is reviewed and
discussed by the members of the First Aid Science Advisory Board.
A list of current topics can be found here.
Completed evidence evaluation forms will be available for public
viewing and comment in December 2004.
After the studies are examined and rated, what is the next step?
The results have been discussed in an ongoing series of meetings and
will culminate with the 2005 Consensus on Science for First Aid with
Treatment Recommendations Conference in Dallas, Texas, January 22-24,
2005.
What if I have something important that I'd like to have considered?
The process will be transparent. Scientists, providers and trainers
in the field of First Aid, as well as the general public, will have
the opportunity to comment on the evidence evaluation conducted by the
experts. Watch this Web site for future announcements regarding
opportunities to give us your comments and feedback. This input will
be incorporated into the discussion at the January 2005 conference.
Who will attend?
Over 60 nationally and internationally recognized experts in the field
of First Aid will have the opportunity to participate in the First Aid
CoSTR Conference.
Is this where the new Guidelines will be drawn up?
No. The 2005 First Aid CoSTR Conference will deal exclusively with
evaluating and interpreting peer-reviewed, published scientific
evidence. The proceedings of this conference will provide the
scientific basis from which each organization will develop its own
guidelines based on the consensus on science with treatment
recommendations.
How will I find out what happened?
Results of the 2005 First Aid CoSTR Conference will be summarized and
published in a special supplement to the journal Circulation in
November 2005.
What about conflicts of interest?
Both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross have
conflict of interest policies that are consistent with "best in
industry" standards. Everyone involved with the 2005 First Aid CoSTR
Conference must complete and sign both an AHA and ARC Conflict of
Interest Questionnaire. This includes not only Task Force members,
but also individual topic experts and authors, participants, and
attendees to the conference.
Every Conflict of Interest Questionnaire is reviewed by the AHA and
ARC and potential significant conflicts of interest are further
reviewed by a Conflict of Interest Task Force. All conflict of
interest information will be included in the 2005 First Aid CoSTR
Conference Program. The AHA and ARC consider conflict of interest of
the utmost importance in maintaining the integrity of the evidence
evaluation process and have made every good faith effort to resolve
any real conflicts of interest among conference participants.

Seperti kita tahu ERC menjadi acuan untuk pelatihan bantuan hidup
didunia (seperti bls, als, aed, acls, apls, nals) baik untuk awam
maupun tenaga medis, sedangkan ARC standarnya pelatihan maupun bukunya
dipakai oleh organisasi nasional palang/bulan merah. Hasilnya tentu
bisa bermanfaat bagi kemajuan first aid (pertolongan pertama) didunia
seperti halnya CPR panduan tahun 2000 yang sekarang dipakai oleh
jutaan orang di seluruh dunia. Semoga saja AHA nggak pelit
mempublikasikan jurnalnya (tiru ERC donk make iklan) yang akan keluar
bulan November.
