New Regulations to Prevent Heat-Related Deaths
http://www.signonsandiego.com
Earlier this month, California lawmakers announced new regulations to protect employees who work outdoors from heat-related illnesses in response to four heat-related deaths among farm workers in July. The new rules require personnel, such as farm workers, construction workers and landscapers, to receive education about heat stress and also be offered shade and drinking water on the job. Although these regulations aren’t specifically mandating any actions for EMS and fire personnel, managers would be wise to follow them as guidelines to prevent any unnecessary illnesses. Because EMS and fire personnel are required to work outdoors and under the same conditions (often in more intense heat and in much more required safety gear), this law will undoubtedly attract a lot of attention to these professions as well.
