Se Asian Water Forum Starts Important Discussions
Jakarta ( Berita ) : The 4th Southeast Asian Water Forum held in Nusa Dua, Bali, has started discussing water supply to be used as drinking water, farming purposes, industry, power generation and sanitation.
"These are important things as not only water management is still facing problems, a sustainable of water supply in the future has assumed increased importance," Secretary of the Water Resources Directorate General in charge of the organizing committee, Moch. Amron said here on Thursday.
At present, the member countries are exchanging their experiences in water management, so that during the rainy season rain water could be collected in a reservoir, lakes or wells. In this way, the water can be used during the rainy season and many regions will be prevented from lack of water supply, like what often happened in Indonesia.
During the exchange of experience and thoughts, the delegates were very enthusiastic in giving their thoughts and experience in such activities. Indonesia mentioned the Jatiluhur Dam as a good example.
The Jatiluhur Dam is a very vital water resource, as it not only supplies water for irrigation of farmland and the surrounding areas, it also supplies clean drinking water to Jakarta residents.
Clean water is also posing the the same problem to big cities in Southeast Asia, Amron said, adding that clean water consumption in Indonesia supplied by the different waterworks in the regions through pipelines reached only 40 percent, and 60 percent of the need is still met by ground water and rivers.
In the meantime, the contemination of ground water in Greater Jakarta has reached 75 percent which is detrimental to the health of the people especially those consuming ground water. Most of these conditions were caused by the fact that many locations where ground water is tapped are located near septic tanks. (ant)
