| A new tool to share knowledge |
Welcome to everybody! The European Reference Centre for First Aid Education is pleased to present you its revised newsletter. The paper version has been replaced by an electronic version, which is easier to read and simpler to distribute within the First Aid Education European Network, the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies and other organisations. This newsletter has been designed to meet one of our common missions: the promotion of First Aid throughout Europe.
This new format offers fours columns in addition to the table of contents and the editorial. In each edition, you will find texts on a leading theme, current news In the field, latest developments and forthcoming events.
As crisis and disasters remain unpredictable as demonstrated by the recent troubles in France and as there are ever increasing numbers of people being made vulnerable by hardship, it is crucial for the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies to pursue their active role in disseminating first aid knowledge. Our mission, therefore, focuses on current needs and events in the society. This is why, in this issue, we have chosen the theme of first aid training for vulnerable people.
We hope that this newsletter will meet your expectations. Please feel free to send us your comments and remarks. Enjoy your reading!

| Teaching first aid to vulnerable people |
Every day, thousands of people die and many more suffer unnecessarily due to a lack of preparation to face an emergency or because they are not provided with adequate and timely assistance. Moreover, some groups of people are considered more vulnerable than others. These two facts stated, first aid education represents a solution because it enables to protect and save lives, alleviate suffering, reinforce solidarity between communities and reduce inequalities. Through a unique network of National Societies and volunteers, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a major player in this field (this commitment being written in the Strategy 2010).
One concrete example of the activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies is the World First Aid Day: this event aims at teaching first aid skills at a large scale. The 2005 edition focused on vulnerable people, who have sometimes hard living conditions).
Who are the priority groups? Which methodology can be used? How to develop training programmes appropriate to these vulnerabilities? Factual examples will help to answer these questions. |
