dear all,

terima kasih atas perhatian anda,
diah

ahoY Emergency Education Program
What?
ahoY believes that, just as food, shelter, healthcare, and sanitation, education should be put as a priority area in emergency response.
Based on its latest assessment in the villages of Sriharjo and Timbulharjo, ahoY identified some problems related to the education sector:
6th Grade National Examination
On 5-7 June, 2006, elementary school students all over Indonesia who are in their 6th grade will undertake a national exam.  The result of this test determines whether or not a student can carry on to secondary education.  Moreover, it determines which secondary school a student can enter – the higher the marks, the better school he or she can enrol in.  Originally, the test would have taken place on 1-3 June, 2006.  Due to the earthquake, it was delayed for a couple of days.
Despite the delay, students in areas hit by the earthquake expressed that they are not ready for the exams.  Not only that the students are still in trauma, they have lost means for studying (books, pencils, erasers, electricity/lighting, teacher, schooling activities).
Final Examination
In about two weeks time, elementary school students who are in grade 1-5 will undertake final exams.  Just like the 6th grade students, they mentioned that they are not prepared for the tests.
“Street Children” Phenomenon
Without having any school activities to attend (due to damaged school building, lack of teachers, etc.), children wander in main streets.  Imitating some young adults, they stop cars and beg for money or aid.
Trauma
Some parents express their concerns and needs for trauma healing for their children.

As a short term intervention, ahoY intend to implement the following activities:
Time Frame
Activities
2-6 June, 2006

5-19 June, 2006

end of June-August 2006

(ongoing)

Deploying volunteers to help 6th graders prepare for the national exam
Deploying volunteers to help elementary school students (grade 1-5) pass their final exams.
Deploying volunteers to run activities during the school break, such as story telling, scout activities, field trip, art workshops, talent shows, etc.
Perform assessment in as many places in the earthquake affected areas on the education sector (number and condition of students, number and condition of teachers, schooling options, etc)
The above activities will be done in enjoyable methods and focus more on students’ psycho-social healing process, rather than their cognitive aspects.  This means that the exam preparation programs do not merely aim at helping students get high scores.  The most important is to prevent students from failing or dropping out from school, to keep children out of streets, and to help them cope with their feelings.
Depending on results of the ongoing assessments and the availability of resources, ahoY will expand this program to other villages.  ahoY will also formulate medium term interventions needed.  Details and progress on this program will be posted in this website.

How to help
At this moment, the program needs:
·         pencils, erasers, writing boards (especially for the national and final exams)
·         text books
·         school supplies: white boards/flipcharts, markers, metaplan, paper, etc.
·         tents, mats (school activities cannot be held in school buildings)
