The Department of Indology at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies of 
the University of Tübingen, Germany, invites applications for a 65% part-time

Doctoral Position (m/f/d; E 13 TV-L, 65%)

for a period of three years. The Department of Indology at the University of 
Tübingen was established in 1856. It offers a unique, friendly, and 
intellectually stimulating environment for research and teaching on the 
history, culture, and languages of the Indian subcontinent. The Tübingen 
University Library and the Specialized Indology Library host one of the most 
extensive collections on South Asia in Europe. The collection includes original 
manuscripts and rare journals that attracts researchers from around the world.

Responsibilities

·    Conducting independent research to complete a dissertation for the degree 
of Dr. Phil. in Indology/ South Asian Studies at the University of Tübingen 
within the allotted time period

·    Teach one course per semester amounting to 2 hours/week

·    Active participation and contribution to the department’s activities, such 
as workshops, public lecture series, exhibitions, etc.

Qualifications 

Candidates must have an above-average master's degree in Indology or in a 
closely-related field by the starting date of the position, 1 October 2022. The 
candidate must have an excellent level in English and have the required Indian 
language skills (e.g. in Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Malayalam, etc.) to carry out 
the research project. Candidates with a research interest in Jainism, Indian 
Buddhism, or other subjects that compliments the research and teaching 
activities of the current faculty members of the Department of Indology are

Applications must consist of:

·    a cover letter

·    curriculum vitae

·    certificates of university degrees

·    list of previous courses and publications (if applicable)

·    one writing sample (e.g. a publication, or a chapter from the BA or MA 
thesis, max. 15 pages)

·    outline of the proposed Ph.D. research project (max. 1500 words)
