Right. Springer’s price gouging is well known to be based on a business model
that depends on insanely high prices for institutional subscriptions to
scientific journals that are primarily, or in many cases exclusively,
distributed electronically. Springer thrives in a post-paper world.

main non, mes amis:

eBook €459.03
Hardcover book €599.49

So there is no paper involved for €460, and heaven forbid if you want it in
paper.

By the way, the extremely odd pricing suggests either that this is converted
from another currency or that the pricing is calculated by some machine with
zero human input; a price with 3 cents is not proposed by a human.

Dear Richard,

The book we’ve been discussing is over 450 euros. I don’t believe that
Springer’s extravagant pricing is a function of rising costs of paper.

Matthew

Matthew &c.,

It'll be curious to see the effect of the past two or three years
on prices. (The cost of paper has certainly increased.) Some
sort of comparison should be possible once figures find their
way through to the ALA:

Thanks, Jay,

I have the good fortune to use a library that has e-access and I can vouch for
the considerable interest of the volume. For readers who may not have such
connections, however, it is unfortunate that it is prohibitively expensive. May
we hope to see a “cheap” edition some day?

best regards,
