Dear Martin, If your friend has not studied Indian music at all and is primarily interested in the Carnatic tradition, a useful introduction may be found in T. Viswanathan and M. H. Allen. Music in South India, Oxford University Press, 2004. It includes a CD with recordings of the examples discussed in the text.
I hope your friend finds this helpful, Matthew Matthew T.
