Finnegan: The Divine Comedy
The latest episode by Gus Dur where he is trying to put together a
"national dialog" between himself, Suharto, Wiranto and Habibie
demonstrates again clearly why Indonesia is in such a mess. There are a
number of puzzling or even confusing signals here.
* What is Gus Dur up to? Is this another one of the famous
Indonesian shadow play?
* Another "National Dialog", another talk-fest, what for? What will
it achieve?
* What happened to the Ciganjur declaration with with Mega, Amien and
the Sultan?
* Suharto is suppose to be just a private citizen, is he not? So, why
is he still involved in the matters of the State. Well, if anyone
is really serious, take a good look at his body language when he
was called to answer questions the other day. He was still the
KING. He displayed total disdain to everyone concerned
* What about Habibie? Is he or is he not the president? But nobody
seems to take any notice of him. He looks to me like a little boy
lost or a little boy who is just very happy to be in the candy
store.
However, I would suspend all my cynicism and let the Neroes fiddle while
Rome is crashing down. I would just like to make one observation about
the Indonesian way. It seems to me that the Indonesians are very good at
talking and talking about WHAT to do but absolutely hopeless of finding
the best way of HOW to do it. Please observe the number of dialogs,
seminars, symposiums, etc etc about WHAT to be done but no one has come
up with HOW to get there.
Unfortunately for Indonesia, the Past, the Present and the Future are
mutually exclusive. Can Indonesia survive 1999??
