THE LOVE WE LOVE TO HATE: HABIBIE
Habibie in Arabic means "Love, darling, honey, etc." But President Habibie
seems
to be the man we love to hate.
Poor guy! Basically he is a nice guy, and judging from Indonesian politics he
is
not as greedy as the other ministers in the Suharto cabinet, eventhough he
never
failed to utilize the opportunities available to him for his own and his
family's ad-
vantages. He tried to give his best skill the best chance there was in the
airplane
industry. He tries his best to become the third President at the most
impossible
time when our multiple national crises exploded unexpectedly.
He is a good Muslim, fasting twice a week in the tradition of "the Wali"
(saint),
generally gone after the World War II. He set up the ICMI, the association of
the
Muslim scholars that generated envy and resentment of the establishment which
were traditionally non-religious.
He is like a small fish in an ocean of trouble.
Poor Habibie, I love him for giving the freedom of the press but I would
rather
demand him to set up a Presidium of emergency which could include himself
and Wiranto to pacify the country while going ahead with the election.
