Suharto will not flee abroad, lawyer says

JAKARTA, Dec 14 (AFP) - Former Indonesian president Suharto, under
investigation for alleged corruption during his 32-year rule, will not flee
abroad and wants to spend the rest of his days in the country, his lawyer
told
a weekly magazine published Monday.
"I was born in Indonesia, took part in raising Indonesia, became part of
Indonesia and I want to die in Indonesia. Do not worry that I will escape
abroad," Suharto was quoted as saying by his lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon,
according to the magazine Gatra.
Tampubolon said in the same interview that the former president had
assured
the authorities he would fully cooperate in the investigation into his
alleged
fortune.
Suharto was grilled Wednesday for over three hours by a team from the
attorney general's office that sought to establish whether the president was
guilty of corruption and abuse of power during his rule that ended when he
resigned in May.
Many, including students, reformists and legal experts, have called for
the
government to slap a house-arrest order on Suharto to prevent him from
fleeing
abroad or tampering with evidence.
They have also called on authorities to formally declare Suharto a
suspect
in a case of corruption, which would entail bringing him to trial, saying
there is enough evidence to justify the move.
They have cited the some three million dollars found in Suharto's bank
accounts here, huge tax breaks given to a national car project run by his
son,
and millions of hectares of land found in the name of companies connected to
his charitable foundations.
The attorney general's office, however, has not said whether the former
president would be declared a suspect.
Tampubolon was one of the seven lawyers who accompanied Suharto during
his
questioning on Wednesday.
