Finnegan: The Longest Suicide Note Ever Written
The University of Indonesia's Sri Mulyani Indrawati, government adviser
Arsjad Anwar, and Rizal Ramli from the Econit research institute said
here on Friday that failure to end the political crisis would lead to
further deterioration in the country's economy. "The recovery of our
economy will become a dream if the political and social crises are not
resolved'" Sri Mulyani told a seminar organized by Bisnis Indonesia on
Friday. "If the general election passes satisfactorily, it will mean
that Indonesia still has as future. But if not, Indonesia will sink.
Rizal said" Jakarta Post, 12/12/98.
Usually in a developed democracy, they like to get the general election
over as quickly as possible. Normally between 4-6 weeks. This is where
the said country already has an established election laws and systems.
Because election is inherent destablising. Election disrupts people's
day to day life. Speculation of oncoming election disrupts business and
investment decisions. And most of all, it paralyses the incumbent
Government, it becomes more interested in the politic of survival rather
than running the country.
This is what happening in Indonesia right now, the Government is
completely paralysed. It seems to make or produce one mickey mouse
decision after another, such as the latest proposal to establish of an
armed civilian militia. ("The planned establishment of an armed civilian
militia is not necessary," Edi (Former defense minister Gen. Edi
Sudradjat) told reporters after addressing a seminar on the threat of
national disintegration" - Jakarta Post - 12/12/98). It is interesting
to note that back in 1964, PKI proposed similar thing. It was called
"The establishment of the Fifth Column" after the Army, Navy, Airforce
and the Police. So it is the greatest irony that the arch enemy of the
PKI, namely the ABRI, would propose what PKI was advocating.
Back to the election. So when the MPR-SI decided to hold the election
next May without establishing the proper laws and systems, it basically
has just written the longest suicide note for Indonesia.
