Box 2338 Jakarta 10240 - Indonesia Re: Appeals to the UN Secretary General Dear Mr. Souryal, In our recent meeting on Friday 16th of April, we have handed to you several documents, including the Letters of Appeals from the KOMITE SOLIDARITAS RAKYAT IRIAN to the UN Secretary General, His Excellency Dr Kofi Anan. The Letters of Appeals were also sent to the RF Kennedy Memorial, Center for Human Rights and which had been followed up by Miss Abigail Abrash to the UN Secretary General Office on October 16th, 1998, and specifically discussed this with Mr. Shashi Tharoor, Director of Communications and Special Projects. Since that time we have not yet received any confirmation from the UN Secretary General Office on what actions have been taken by the UN. The urgent appeals on July have never been responded, while during that time the people were so desperately looking for help from the UN. The appeals were not unfounded, the killings have continued to the massacre on July 6th last year in Biak. Intimidation and arrests have taken place and kept continuing up to this date and more specifically after the National Dialog on July 26th this year and we believe that the situation in West Papua is going to be developed like East Timor, Ambon and Sambas. Therefore we attach hereby also the Announcement from the Chief of Police and other related messages from West Papua and would like ask your favor to re-open our line of communication with the UN Secretary General Office in New York and which hopefully will be personally approached by our people within a few days.
