"We are ready to accept the outcome of a free, secret, honest and just ballot, because it is for such result that CNRT has been fighting for. It is by way of a ballot that sovereignty is restored to its owners-the people," he said in Dili Friday. He added that the prointegrationist political elite in East Timor has always claimed that the majority of the people has chosen to integrate with the Indonesian unitary state, and on the other hand, the proindependence groups have always stated that the majority of the population wished to secede from the Republic of Indonesia. If the two views are allowed to prevail, the political conflict in East Timor would never end. And therefore the only way would be to test the two claims through the ballot. If the majority of the East Timorese people opted for a wide- ranging autonomy, East Timor would remain with the Indonesian unitary state, and the CNRT would follow and support the majority decision. On the other hand, if the majority of the people rejected the offered wide-ranging autonomy, and preferred a separation from the Indonesian unitary state, the prointegration groups would have to accept the outcome. "Therefore in the run up to the ballot on August 8 the political elites of both camps must prepare themselves to accept defeat and respect the victory of the other side. Then hand in hand build East Timor towards common welfare," he said.
