UNAMET Must Be Independent in E Timor

Dili, 19/6 (ANTARA) - Secretary to the Coordinating Minister for
Political and Security Affairs Major General Karyono felt that
the United Nations mission for ballot in East Timor (UNAMET)
scheduled for August 8, 1999, should act independently and not
take sides.

After meeting several authorities in the region here on
Saturday, Karyono said if UNAMET take sides, it will create
ambiguity in what was supposed to do in East Timor.

In his experience on many occasions, Karyono said, a United
Nations mission already has certain instructions and directives.

"I joined a UN mission on two occasions, namely in the Garuda V
contingent in Vietnam and the Garuda IX contingent in the Middle
East, and all out tasks had been determined beforehand," he
pointed out.

When asked about the security situation in the former Portuguese
colony, he said everything was under control, and that there had
been no fighting between the East Timorese themselves.

When asked about Ramos Horta's wish to come to East Timor, he
said the anti-integration leader now living in Australia had
been banned from the Indonesian youngest province. "What Foreign
Minister Ali Alatas has said about it was already in accordance
with existing procedures," he said.
