Baucau District Govt Ready To Assist Local UNAMET

Baucau, E Timor, June 19 (ANTARA) - The Baucau district
administration is basically ready to assist the United Nations
Assessment Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) in the performance of
its tasks to make a success of the August 8 ballot, a spokesman
said here.

Virgilio Maria Dias Marcal, Baucau district administration
chief, said he had received a report from Ms Denise, coordinator
of the UNAMET branch in Baucau, about the opening of her office
in Baucau to organize and oversee the ballot in the district.

"The UNAMET has opened an office in Baucau and will start to
function next June 23 with a drive to collect data on the
communities in the subdistricts and villages," he said.

"We hope the UN mission here can embrace all groups in the
community, both the pro-integration as well as the pro-
independence groups, or in other words, remain neutral and not
side with this or that group," Marcal said.

"Otherwise, the effort to assess the people's opinion will run
into trouble or even fail altogether," he added.

Ms Denise, meanwhile, said she hoped all sides in the district,
particularly the district authorities, would give their
assistance and cooperation to the UN mission.

Her office would be responsible for the conduct of the vote not
only in Baucau district but also in Manatuto district, she said.

"We would like to thank the Baucau district administration for
having provided us with an adequate office building and to
express our intention to cooperate constantly with the local
authorities by asking for suggestions and advice relating to
whatever is needed in the forthcoming ballot," she said.

The UNAMET's Baucau office would eventually be manned by a 66-
member staff. At present it only had seven people, two
foreigners and five East Timorese.
