Peace Pact Starts to be Disseminated

Dili, June 20 (ANTARA) - The Peace and Stability Commission in
East Timor (KPS) here Sunday started to disseminate through various local
media the disarmament pact between the pro-
independent Concelho Nacional Resistancia Timorense (CNRT) and
armed Falintil and the pro-integration groups reached on June
18.

"In facing the direct ballot scheduled on August 8, it is agreed
that the key to success of the ballot process would be achieved
if the two sides are aware that they have the same rights and
obligations in determining the future of East Timor," the
statement said.

It said that all sides agree to support efforts at maintaining
security and a peaceful condition, call on their followers to
hand over their arms and weapons to the authorities.

Besides disarming, both the leaders of CNRT and the Falintil
(Forcas Armadas Liebertasm de Timor Leste) as well as the pro-
integration groups also issued a joint call to disputing groups
to immediately stop their conflict, including the use of fire
arms and intimidation.

"Together we maintain security, peace, and public order and
avoid every effort of pitting one against another, which may
cause us to blame one another for disturbing the security," the
call said.

The agreement was signed by jailed proindependence leader Jose
Alexander Xanana Gusmao - the president of CNRT, CNRT member
Leandro Isaac, Domingus Soares from the Forum for Peace,
Democracy and Justice, and civil militia commander Joao da Silva
Tavares, at the Justice Ministry in Jakarta.

The occasion was witnessed by some figures from various
institutions in East Timor, inclulding the local government,
police, Dili diocese, and the national commission of human
rights.
