E. Timor : UNAMET Office in Bobonaro Attacked

Dili, June 29 (ANTARA)- A group of prointegration youths attacked
the UNAMET (United Nations Assessment Mission in East Timor)
office in Bobonaro district injuring several people, including an
UNAMET officer, police said.

"They pelted stones at the UNAMET office out of jealousy because
they don't know about UNAMET's tasks," East Timor police spokesman
Col Widodo told reporters here Tuesday.

Due to the attack the house accomodating the UNAMET office was
damaged and several people, including an UNAMET staffer identified
as Frederick, suffered scratch wounds.

The incident was overcome after police came to the scene.

Widodo said prointegration people in the district, particularly
youths, thought UNAMET had been unfair and taken sides.

The acts of UNAMET staff had caused jealously as their office was
used for a gathering of people belonging to the proindependence
group.

He said the UNAMET's presence had "revived" the antiintegration
spirit among people who had earlier been won over to the
prointegration side.

"That kind of behavior was what caused the incident. It was not
a brawl as some people claim," he said.

He said the police had summoned the leaders of the two groups and
briefed them about the role of UNAMET. He said the police had also
asked them not to take any advantage of UNAMET's presence.

Mentioning an instance of antiintegration aggressivenes, Widodo
said youths belonging to that group attacked a police patrol car
Monday, hurting the patrol's chief.

He said the car was just passing the village of Matadoro after
dropping off several policemen at a nearby UNAMET office.

"Many Indonesian police officers have fallen victim in Matadoro,
a village known as an antiintegration base," he said.
