Timor: UN Peacekeeping Force Not Yet Needed - UNAMET Chief Dili, E. Timor, June 30 (ANTARA) - Chief of the United Nations Assessment Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), Ian Martin,on Wednesday reaffirmed that there still no need for a UN peacekeeping force to secure the autonomy ballot to be held in East Timor this August. Martin was responding to newsmen's questions on wheather or not a UN peacekeeping force is needed following Tuesday's attack on UNAMET officer. "The UN secretary general however will make the final assessment on the security condition before the ballot," he said. He further noted that the tripartite agreement signed by Indonesia, Portugal and the UN in New York last May 5 stated that the security in the territory is the responsibility of the Indonesian police, with support from the UN civilian police. Indonesian's military leaders recently guaranteed East Timor's security prior to the ballot, he said. Commenting on the Bobonaro incident, member of East Timor's Justice, Democracy and Unity Forum, Antonio Castro da Silva, said the UNAMET should realize that it is dealing with people who have been living in conflict in the past 23 years. "If the UNAMET was attacked, it should not only blame (a group), but it should try to understand that hundreds of East Timorese have been facing similiar attacks for years," Antonio said.
