ANTARA, JULY 6 1999

E. Timor: No Plan To Deploy UN Troops, Alatas Says

Jakarta, July 6 (ANTARA)-Indonesia's Foreign Affair Minister Ali
Alatas said Tuesday that according to the New York Agreement
signed by Indonesia, Portugal and the United Nations, there is no
plan to deploy UN troops to East Timor.

"There is no such plan, and I assert that there will never be one.
UN deployment will only cover the sending of policemen to help
enhance the implementation of the direct ballot," Alatas said.

The minister made the statement during a break in a hearing with
House of Representatives (DPR) Commision I on foreign affairs.

He was commenting on a statement made by head of the UN Mission in
East Timor (UNAMET), Ian Martin, that the UN secretary general
will consider the need to deploy UN troops to East Timor following
clashes between warring camps in Maliana, Liquica and Viqueque
districts.

According to foreign press reports, the UNAMET said UN troops will
be deployed to East Timor following physical confrontations
between conflicting camps in the territory during the past few
days.

Alatas pointed out that reports on the deployment of the UN troops
were the fruit of fabrications made by foreign journalists.

"Those were speculations by some foreign journalists. And I hope
that the Indonesian press will not fall for that trap," the
minister said.

The speculations were based on false reports on the situation in
East Timor, which was portrayed by the foreign press as higly
dangerous, he said.

Alatas stressed that the New York Agreement does not make any
stipulation on the deployment of UN troops to East Timor.

"I have often said that there is no such plan," he noted.

Commenting on shots originating from an UNAMET car in last
Sunday's incident in Liquica district, Alatas said, "We expect a
thorough investigation to prevent such a shooting from recurring."

Alatas made it clear that Indonesia has never accused the UNAMET
of taking sides with the anti-integration camp.

"We just demand strong discipinary measures against some culprits
in UNAMET. And of course, we expect UNAMET to be fair," Alatas
said.
