Rejecting vote results may mean jail sentence

JAKARTA (IO) =97 Members of the General Election Commission (KPU) who reject=20
the signing of the election results without any strong reasons, face a jail=20
term of up to three months, a KPU member said here yesterday.

"If they [KPU members] reject signing the election result without valid=20
reason, not only will this be ignored by the Election Monitoring Body, but=20
those who reject signing it also face a jail term of up to three months,"=20
said a KPU member, Djuhad Mahya.

Mahya, who represents the United Development Party (PPP) at the KPU, said=20
Article 73, Paragraph 10 of the election law says that KPU members who ignor=
e=20
their duty, face three months in jail or a Rp10,000,000 fine.

The Indonesian Election Committee (PPI), the KPU executive body, announced=20
the election result last week, but it must be confirmed by KPU members.

The announcement of the final election result by KPU was delayed from July 2=
1=20
to July 26 because some KPU members rejected signing it. Some KPU members=20
said that before violations by several political parties are resolved, they=20
will not sign the election result.
