Indonesian president Habibie rules out coalition with Megawati: report

TOKYO, July 25 (AFP) - Indonesian President B.J. Habibie has ruled out
forming a coalition government with a party led by popular opposition figure
Megawati Sukarnoputri, a Japanese newspaper said Sunday.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun quoted Habibie as saying such an alliance would
never happen despite "speculation" his ruling Golkar party may share power
with Megawati's Indonesian Democracy Party of Struggle (PDIP).

Last Tuesday, PDIP secretary general Alex Litaay said in Jakarta that his
party was ready for strategic alliances "with anyone at any time."

Megawati's party earned the top share in the general election last June with
about 33 percent of the votes, the president noted in an interview with the
leading economic daily at his official residence Saturday.

The ruling party came second with 22 percent.

The election will determine the make-up of the People's Consultative
Assembly, the highest constitutional body due to choose the next president in
November.

Megawati, the daughter of Indonesian founding president Sukarno, is PDIP's
presidential candidate.

Habibie said he would accept "any decision" made by the People's Consultative
Assembly.

"I am ambitious to make my country a modern society," the president was
quoted as saying.

Commenting on the results of the general election, Habibie said there had
been no single victor in the polls.

"The winners are the people of Indonesia" who ensured the election was
peaceful and democratic, he said.
