Voters registration: Security In East Timor Quite Conducive-UNAMET

Dili, E Timor, July 23 (ANTARA)- The security in East Timor during
the past seven days of voters registration has been quite
conducive, spokesman of the UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET),
Ueki Yasuhiro, said here Friday.

Each day, an increasing number of people are coming to the
registration centers to register for next month's autonomy ballot,
Yasuhiro said, attributing the conducive situation to the good
cooperation between the people, the Indonesian governmnet, the
UNAMET and the security apparatus.

UNAMET chief, Ian Martin, and UN civilian police chief, Allan
Mills, were scheduled to speak before senior officials of the
UNAMET and the Indonesian Police Friday for a one-day evaluation
of the security in East Timor.

Yasuhiro said Martin would convey the conducive situation during
the voters registration to the UN Security Council.

He said UNAMET officials in East Timor have noted the marked
improvement in the security in the former Portuguese territory.

According to him, the UN secretary general last Tuesday submitted
an official report to the UN Security Council, saying that
significant progress has been achieved in the security in East
Timor.

The UN secretary general, he said, also stated that the
governments of Indonesia and Portugal have approved the placement
of 50 official observers at the registration posts and that three
election commision officials have arrived in East Timor--Patrick
Bradley from North Ireland, Johan Kriegler from South Africa and
Sohn Bong Scuk from South Korea.

Yasuhiro pointed out that the UNAMET and the UN civilian police
have been working with the Indonesian police.

Some 50 liaison officers of the UNAMET, led by Brig. Gen Rezaqul
Heider, have also established good cooperation with the Indonesian
Armed Forces, he said.

"After the Indonesian government made a commitment to confiscate
armes carried by the public, there has so far been no incident in
which the staff members and offices of the UNAMET have been
attacked," he said.

He however expressed hope that the security in such districts as
Maliana, Viqueque, Liquica, Suai and Manatuto would improve.

He also remainded that the issue on East Timorese refugees should
be addressed to enable them to join the ballot.

The UN secretary general, Yasuhiro said, is convinced that the
Indonesian government would continue efforts to ensure the
security in East Timor.
