"What kind of campaign? Is it the same as prior to a general election? We still don't know about it," said Alberto Freitas, an East Timorese youth, in a talk with ANTARA here Friday. Nobody had ever received information on the campaign procedures, he said, adding that some East Timorese youth groups in Lisbon were eager to discuss the activities relating to the direct ballot as well as the consequences and political repercussions to be faced in the future. "Many registrants at the office of the United Nations Mission in East Timor are new to us," he said. Since July 16, the UNAMET office in Lisbon has also been functioning as a place to meet for East Timorese registering for the direct ballot on August 30 this year. The UNAMET office in Portugal Thursday recorded around 2,107 prospective voters eligible for the direct ballot. The figure is lower than previous predictions which set the number within the range of 1,500 to 2,000 people. Most East Timorese in Portugal are accommodated at some refugees centers in Lisbon such as Alvalade, Amadora and Alcantara. The unidentified youth in Portugal who said he was born in Los Palos, East Timor said that so far his colleagues and pro- independence activists were coordinated by the National Struggle East Timorese People's Front Council. Before migrating to Portugal, he had been living in Yogyakarta as a University student. The activities of the council were well organized. But, it was not the only dominant group that could unite the interests of East Timorese people in Portugal. "There are many other groups. Unfortunately we often have different opinions," he said.
