There was no immediate official statement, but one Indonesian officer who was at the site told journalists some soldiers in the compound fired shots into the air, apparently to protest their commandant's beating of a fellow officer. The Indonesian officer, working for the U.N.-affiliated Commission on Peace and Stability in East Timor, said the incident in the Balide area of East Dili was an 'internal' military matter. Witnesses told Kyodo News the firing lasted for about 30 minutes from around 2:45 p.m. Soldiers turned away journalists who tried to approach the compound. Rumors spread quickly the soldiers were protesting top-level personnel changes in East Timor, but those were quickly denied by military officials. The local commandant was replaced Thursday, leading some to believe the move was linked to continual international charges the Indonesian military is backing pro-Jakarta militia who have been terrorizing parts of East Timor ahead of a U.N.-backed vote on autonomy at the end of August. The military, however, noting the former commandant is being promoted to brigadier general from colonel, rejected the speculation as unfounded. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Didistribusikan tgl. 14 Aug 1999 jam 10:48:09 GMT+1 oleh: Indonesia Daily News Online <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.Indo-News.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
