Militants stirring unrest in Timor-Indonesia army

JAKARTA, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Indonesia's armed forces warned on Tuesday that
militants from both pro- and anti-independence groups were out to provoke
violence as East Timor prepares for next week's ballot on its future status.

``There is a group of people, who are quite radical and extreme, who are
trying to provoke these kind of activities (violence),'' Brigadier-General
Sudrajat told reporters after he was sworn in as the military's new chief
spokesman.

Sudrajat said the provocateurs were from ``those who want independence as
well as those who want integration with autonomy.''

He said the military would discourage violence.

``We don't want it and want to discourage such violence, which can create
trouble,'' said Sudrajat.

East Timor votes on Monday for either wide-ranging autonomy within Indonesia
or independence.

Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975 and annexed it the following year, a
move not recognised by the United Nations.

In January, President B.J. Habibie reversed a 23-year policy and said the
government would let East Timor decide its future.

Earlier on Tuesday, a pro-integration leader, Tito Baptista, said pro-Jakarta
groups were prepared to wage a guerrilla war if they lose Monday's vote by a
narrow margin.
