"It (the statement) is a serious threat to democracy. It should not be made by a Nobel Peace Prize laureate," spokesman for the Task Force for the Implementation of Popular Consultation in East Timor (P3TT) Dino Pati Djalal said here Thursday. Djalal said told an interview with BBC broadcast on Wednesday that Horta said that he will cooperate with 100 computer hackers from the United States and Europe to send a dozen viruses into Indonesia's computer system. The hackers are now waiting for Horta's command, Djalal quoted Horta as saying. The interview also became a headline in the Australian daily the Sydney Morning Herald. The 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate said young hackers planned to send a dozen viruses into Indonesia's banking, army, aviation, and communications computers. He also said that the Portugal could be expected to seek an arms embargo and economic sanctions, the UN would be urged to organize a war crimes tribunal, and world economic bodies would also be urged to freeze funds to Jakarta. Horta's threat is also a violation of the code of conduct for popular consultation in East Timor, Djalal added. Under the code of conduct, there should be no threat and intimidation against a certain party during the campaign period. In addition, both pro-integration and pro-independence groups has agreed to accept the outcome of the ballot set for August 30. According to Djalal, who followed the BBC interview, Horta did not elaborate on the words "not in accordance with his wish". However, Djalal will report Horta's threat to the government, especially to the Agency for the Assessment and Aplication of Technology (BPPT), to take the necessary measures in dealing with the intimidation. Djalal hopes that Horta will not proceed with his plan and become more mature politically. Djalal also said that the East Timorese people should not be influenced by the threat and continue with their campaign.
