E Timor: GOLKAR Leader Slams UNAMET Personnel's Inability To
Remain Neutral

Dili, E Timor, August 23 (ANTARA)- Golkar Party leader Akbar
Tanjung here Monday critizied the inability of certain UNAMET
(United Nations Mission in East Timor) personnel to remain neutral
and their tendency to side with the anti integration group.

He said local Golkar figures and sympathisers had observed that
part of the UNAMET staff always acted in favor of the anti
integration camp ahead of the planned direct ballot next August
30.

Speaking before a group of Golkar loyalists shortly after arriving
here for two-day visit, Tanjung said he heard that in recruting
local people to strengthen its staff, UNAMET had mostly hired
people belonging to the anti integration group.

Certain UNAMET officilas had also often helped proindependence
East Timorese by giving them shelter inside UNAMET posts, he added.

Indonesia will offer the people of East Timor wide-ranging
autonomy within Indonesia through the autonomy ballot. If the
mayority of the East Timorese reject the offer, the Indonesian
government would propose to the People's Consultative Assembly
(MPR) to let East Timor go.
