"The 48 hours imposed on TNI (the Indonesian Armed Forces) in the previous time also applies to the multinational forces," Indonesian military spokesman Major General Sudrajat (Eds: one name) told journalists at parliament. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said earlier this month that the Indonesian military, who imposed martial law in East Timor on September 7, should restore law and order in the territory within 48 hours otherwise Jakarta should accept the deployment of an international force. "When it comes to maintaining security, we should not play around with a deadline," Sudrajat said, speaking in English. A UN-sanctioned multinational force, the International Force for East Timor (Interfet), began to deploy in East Timor early Monday. The full complement of the force, totalling some 7,500 people, is expected to be in place by the end of the week. Indonesian military authorities in the East Timorese capital of Dili said they expected to hand over the reins of security to the Interfet within this week. Sudrajat also said that there has yet to be a decision on whether to lift martial law. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Didistribusikan tgl. 23 Sep 1999 jam 12:01:59 GMT+1 oleh: Indonesia Daily News Online <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.Indo-News.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
