Lobby group begins inquiry into Timorese war crimes
An Australian lobby group will begin a national people's inquiry into
war crimes in East Timor today in Sydney.

The Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor group says the
inquiry aims to investigate the relationship between the Australian and
Indonesian governments since 1974.

It says the inquiry will examine what knowledge Australian governments
had of the oppression and violence inflicted on the Timorese people by
the Indonesian Army.

The inquiry's Sydney chairman, Liam Mitchell, has questioned the
independence of the Senate committee hearing into East Timor.

"It is controlled by the same parties that have actually been, for the
last 24 years, quite involved in supporting the Indonesian occupation
and holding the same foreign policy over those 24 years," he said.

"They have changed their tune a little bit, but we don't feel that it's
going to be independant enough or critical enough of those governments
and their role."
