Refugiados preocupam Jacarta (Refugess Worry Jakarta)

The Indonesian government wants to solve quickly the refugee
problem that are in West Timor to avoid a worsening in the
economic and social conditions that already are developing in the
zone, Xanana Gusmao said. The Timorese leader spoke to journalists
after going together to the border with General Peter Cosgrove,
for an encounter with Indonesian military and civil authorities,
in an attempt of speeding up the refugees' repatriation that are
still in West Timor.

As it indicated, the military as well as the civilian authorities,
including the governor of the province of Western Timor, Piet

Tallo, recognized that the refugees' presence in the Indonesian
half of the island is to cause "serious problems". During the
encounter, Piet Tallo said to Xanana Gusmao and Peter Cosgrove
that more than 171 thousand refugees are in the area, among them
about 60 thousand military, police and employees and their
respective familiy. Estimates of the local authorities suggest
that more than 110 thousand of that total intends to return to
East Timor. "The governor said that the fast return of the
Timorese is even necessary because there are also problem s in
West Timor. The population of Atambua is not conditions of
supporting or of continuing to have the refugees there", said
Xanana Gusmao. Taking all that into account, the will exists to
solve the problem. The governor and the local officials of the
Indonesian Government acknowledge--the difficulties in having 171
thousand people there, that could create additional economic
instability".

About the internal situation, Xanana said that "the largest
challange that East Timor will face next time is political. For 24
years the Timoreses were united for a common objectives, that was
the independence. "Today they begin to appear conflicts of
interests, which is natural", said Xanana, although alerting that
"certain acts can have the people loose the trust in the future".*
