UK WANTS TO STRENGTHEN INVESTMENT, TRADE LINKS WITH RI, SAYS
BRITISH MINISTER

Jakarta, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - The United Kingdom (UK) wants to
strengthen its investment and trade links with Indonesia and thus
become a long-term partner in the business sector, a visiting
British Minister said.

"Indonesia has a huge potential market and we want to see a
stronger Indonesia emerge to face the challenges of the future,"
British Deputy Foreign Minister John Battle said at a luncheon
talk hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia
(BritCham) here Tuesday.

He said Britain was the second largest foreign investor in
Indonesia and the visit of a high-level business delegation to
Jakarta in December 1999 demonstrated its tremendeous interest in
business opportunities in Indonesia.

British businessmen, he said, would be reliable partners of
Indonesian counterparts as Indonesia was rebuilding its shattered
economy.

He said foreign investors, including those from Britain, needed a
stable political environment to invest in the country.

Battle said the British government would stand by the Indonesian
government in its effort to resolve the problems the country was
facing and to preserve national unity and integrity.

"Good governance and high standard of business ethics are the key
requirements for an environment in which trade and investment can
flourish. We support every step the Indonesian government takes
to achieve these targets," he added.

He said the British government welcomed President Abdurrahman
Wahid's commitment to tackling corruption and creating an open
and competitive market.

Visiting Indonesia for the second time, Battle arrived here on
Sunday (Jan 16) and is to leave again on Wednesday (Jan 19).

Before speaking at the Britcham's luncheon talk, Battle had met
several Indonesian cabinet ministers, including Coordinating
Minister of Economic, Financial and Industrial Affairs Kwik Kian
Gie, Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab, Defence Minister Juwono
Sudarsono, Attonery General Marzuki Darusman and Human Rights
Affairs Hasballah M. Saad.

He is scheduled to visit East Timor refugees in the Indonesian
province of East Nusa Tenggara and also go to Dili, capital of
East Timor.
