E JAVA MILY COMAMMANDER: US MUST APOLOGIZE TO INDONESIA

Madiun, E Java, Feb 14 (ANTARA)-Chief of the Brawijaya military
district command in East Java Maj. Gen. Sudi Silalahi said the US
government must offer an apology to Indonesia for its role in
forming a world opinion that the National Defence Forces (TNI)
would launch a coup against President Abdurrahman Wahid's
government.

"A US military attache came to my office some time ago to offer
an apology. But that is not enough. It is the US government that
must offer the apology," Silalahi said here on Monday. Silalahi
said the attache's apology was meaningless as the world
community would not know about it.

"The US military attache may 17 times offer an apology to me in
just one minute, but nobody will know about it," he said.

He said US Ambassador to UN Richard Halbrooke had formed the
world opinion that the TNI would attempt a coup.

"I asked the military attache what was the indication, proof and
sign of the TNI intending to launch a coup attempt, and it turn
out that he could not show anything," he said.

Silalahi quoted the US military attache as asying that Richard
Halbrooke's statement was his personal opinion and not formal
statement of the US government.

But he rejected the argumentation. "No, he (Holbrooke) could not
make the personal statement. He is the representative of the US
nation," he argued.

While President Wahid was making a 16-day overseas tour, rumours
were rife that the TNI would launch a coup but they did not
materialize.
