Japanese PM Backs RI Reforms

TOKYO - Japan's new prime minister promised continued support
for Indonesia's economic reform efforts in a brief meeting
yesterday with visiting President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Yoshiro Mori, who took office earlier this month after Prime
Minister Keizo Obuchi collapsed and fell into a coma, told Wahid
that he will carry on his predecessor's policies toward
Indonesia, according to a Japanese Foreign Ministry official.

Wahid thanked Mori for Tokyo's su pport of the agreement among
the Paris Club of creditor nations last week to reschedule
US$5.8 billion in Indonesian debt, said the official, who
briefed reporters after the meeting.

The move reflects the world's confidence in Indonesian economic
recovery. The Paris Club expects the International Monetary Fund
to approve that package as early as June.

Mori said Wahid's visit - Mori's first meeting with a head of
state as prime minister - shows the importance of Japan-
Indonesia relations.

Wahid is on his way back from the Group of 77 summit of
developing nations in Havana and left Tokyo a few hours after
his arrival Sunday morning. Mori told Wahid he wanted to build
"a warm, personal relationship," the official said. Mori also
promised to convey Wahid's wishes for Obuchi's recovery to his
family.

Mori promised Tokyo's continued support for the "integrity of
Indonesia" in the regions torn by separatist violence. He noted
that Japan has recently pledged aid for refugees in the troubled
province of Aceh. - AP

More than 5,000 people have died in the past decade in the
struggle to break away from Indonesia in Aceh.

Both sides announced as July 3 the date for a meeting in Jakarta
of experts from both nations on financial and international
policy, the official said. Wahid and Obuchi agreed last November
to start the group, called the Japan Indonesia Advisory Network.
