UNTAET TO TAKE MEASURES AGAINST AUSSIE SOLDIER INVOLVED IN
ESPIONAGE

Laktutus, E Nusatenggara, Apr 18 (ANTRA) - Udayana Regional
Military Commander Maj Gen Kiki Syahnakri has confirmed that the
UNTAET (United Nations Transitional Administration in East
Timor) will take measures against Sergeant Person, a member of
its Peace-Keeping Force (UNPKF) for being involved in a spy
ring.

"UNPKF commander Jaime De Los Santos and UNPKF`s Western Sector
Commander Brig Gen Brian Lewis have stated that beside
repatriating the suspect to his corps in Australia, Sergeant
Person will also be legally processed for the violation he has
committed," Kiki told the press at a TNI border post at Laktutus
village on Monday.

According to an investigation by UNTAET, Sergeant Person had
ordered Paul Talo Alberto, an East Timorese, to spy on the
activities of pro-integration militiamen in Atambua.
Unfortunately, Paul was captured by the Indonesian police in
Haikesak, an area close to the border shared by Indonesia and
East Timor.

Person had confessed he had picked up Paul from the latter`s
house and taken him to the border to cross into Indonesian
territory. Person also gave Paul a sum of money and promised him
employment after successful completion of his assignment.

On the possibility of more people within the UNPKF being
involved in espionage, Kiki said he was not ruling it out. But
what could be proved so far was only Sergeant Person`s case.

General Jaime De Los Santos` statement, according to Kiki, was a
response to a denial issued by an UNTAET official in Kupang,
capital of East Nusa Tenggara province, several days ago.

UNTAET had remained silent about the issue until Kiki brought it
up on the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding on technical cooperation between the National
Defence Forces (TNI) and the UNKPF in Dili, capital of East
Timor, not long ago. (U.PA01/RSI-03/22:30/IAJM-00:26/RSI-03)
