"Under such law, money from narcotics, corruption, banking crimes and others could be confiscated and the perpetrators could be punished," director general for law and legislation, Romli Atmasasmita, said here Monday. The anti-money laundering bill, which is nearing completion, will stress that money laundering is a crime, Romli said. According to him, Indonesia urgently needs such a law, as the government is encountering difficulties in detecting ill-gotten wealth with the use of the outdated investigation procedure based on criminal code. He noted that the new law will give investigators greater access to the suspects` bank accounts and other evidences not stipulated in the criminal code. Romli further said that the increasing demand for development in the era of globalization has forced Indonesia to make an inventory of its laws on economy, politics, trade, banking and other fields. The inventory of laws should go side by side with a change in attitude, based on strong will, on the part of all components of society, especially the political elite, he said. The new law should be able to show the weaknesses in "the rule of law" which could be "easily infected" by corruption, collusion and nepotism, he said.
