GOVT REPRESENTATIVE SLAMS GAM FOR ATTACK ON POLICE UNIT

Banda Aceh, July 4 (ANTARA) - The government`s representative in
the comittee to enforce the ceasefire with the separatist Free
Aceh Movement (GAM) here Monday slammed the rebel organization
for an attack on a police Mobile Brigade unit in which three
policemen died and six others were wounded.

"We will protest this deplorable GAM action which is a violation
of the Joint Understanding between Indonesia and GAM," Senior
Superintendent (new name of the rank of Colonel) Ridwan Karim
said.

Speaking to the press here Monday, Karim said a 12-man
detachment of Mobile Brigade was sprayed with bullets by GAM
members on Sunday in Blang Kareng village, Nisam subdistrict.

The ceasefire agreement officially called "Joint Understanding
for a Humanitarian Pause" was signed in Switzerland last May 12
and became effective on June 2.

Karim said one article of the agreement clearly stipulated there
would be no attack or any other provocative action in the field
during the humanitarian pause.

He said the government would file a formal protest note to GAM
and also to the monitoring team of the joint committee in
Geneva.

In addition, Karim said, he would ask the Aceh police chief to
investigate the incident.

"I will request the Aceh police chief to investigate the attack
and detain the culprits for further legal actions," Karim added.

Meanwhile, North Aceh district police chief Superintendent
(equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel) Syafei Aksal said security
forces had mounted an operation to pursue the GAM members
involved in the attack.

"The police, assisted by members of the Army and the Marine
Corps will continue to chase the GAM elements that carried out
the attack," Aksal said.

Meanwhile, a GAM spokesman reportedly said the attack on the
Mobile Brigade unit at Blang Kareng happened because the GAM
personnel concerned had been "forced" to do it.
