U.S. says it will not intervene in Maluku

JAKARTA (JP): The United States government will not intervene in
the communal clashes in Maluku and North Maluku due to its
strong confidence that the Indonesian government will be able to
solve the prolonged sectarian conflict, an official said on
Monday.

U.S. Ambassador Robert S. Gelbard said his government expected
that the conflicts, which have claimed thousands of lives, would
be settled soon and those responsible for inciting the riots
would be brought to justice. "We're oncerned about the number of
people, both from Muslim and Christian groups, killed in the
clashes," Gelbard said after meeting with Vice President
Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Gelbard added that his government was preparing humanitarian aid
to ease the burden on the displaced people, who are also victims
of the clashes. "Economical aid for the humanitarian mission
will soon be realized, not only for Maluku but also Poso (in
Central Sulawesi), which has similar conflicts," he told Antara.

Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab said Indonesia
welcomed any aid from foreign countries for the troubled areas,
but signaled that the government insisted in seeking a solution
to the conflicts without foreign intervention.
