The statement, issued by a body called "Joint Forum for the Humanitarian Pause" Saturday evening, said the two sides "reconfirmed their support for the Humanitarian Pause in Aceh and have agreed in principle to extend it to the second phase." The 3-paragraph statement did not say for how long the accord was to be extended but that "the requirements from both sides for Phase II will be discussed in detail at a Joint Forum meeting scheduled for mid-September in Switzerland." Signed in Davos, Switzerland last May 12, the original agreement took effect more than a fortnight later on June 2 for three months. Representing the Indonesian government at the signing last May 12 was the then Indonesian Ambassador to Switzerland, Hasan Wirajuda, while GAM was represented by one of its "ministers", Zaini Abdullah. Saturday`s statement did not mention who both sides would appoint to conduct the scheduled Joint Forum meeting in mid- September in Switzerland. Contacted on Saturday evening, meanwhile, an official at the Foreign Affairs Ministry here said the Indonesian government had not yet decided whom it would assign to meet the GAM side in Switzerland. "It could be Hasan Wirajuda, or it could be someone else," the official, who refused to be named, said, adding that the decision would be made by President Abdurrahman Wahid. When Wirajuda signed the original accord in Davos last May, he was not representing the Foreign Ministry but acting more like a "personal representative" of the president, the official said. Wirajuda is now the Foreign Ministry`s director general for political affairs. "He (Wirajuda), at that time, happened to be the Indonesian ambassador to Switzerland and his station was the closest to the Henry Dunant Center (the facilitator of the talks with GAM at the time) as well as to the chosen venue of the signing ceremony ," he said. About the possibility that the president would again appoint Wirajuda to talk with GAM this time, the source said Wirajuda possessed the capability to do the job. "He is a good negotiator and has a great understanding on human rights as well," he said. Before being posted as ambassador to Switzerland, Wirajuda was the Foreign Ministry`s director general for international organizations. He previously also served as ambassador to Egypt.
