Luhut B Panjaitan: Atambua incident 'will have little impact'

Reporter: D. Sangga Buwana / AP

Jakarta - Concern is mounting by the IMF that Atambua may have
an influence on the view of the Consultative Group on Indonesia
(CGI). However, the Minister for Trade and Industry, Luhut B
Panjaitan, feels that, if there is any influence, it is very
small.

When asked by detikcom reporters today, Sunday 10 September
2000, he said that "The influence (of this case) on Indonesia
will only be temporary. If Indonesia is threatened by the CGI,
it will only be short-term. But we have to be realistic. What is
clear, we didn't want this incident to happen," said Luhut.

As in previous reports, in a meeting between the Speaker of the
House of Representatives, Akbar Tandjung, and the IMF's
representative in Jakarta, John Dodsworth, concern was raised
that Indonesia will be threatened by the CGI. It is likely that
such an event would interfere with international commitments to
loan funds to Indonesia.

When asked what he thought was the cause of the Atambua
incident, Luhut, who holds the rank of Lieutenant General in the
Indonesian Army, said that in his opinion, it happened because
of feelings of frustration. When asked what the political fall-
out will be, he said that he didn't know.

Luhut assessed that if the incident is made into a problem by
the international community, it wont be a big issue. "What is
important, we have done everything asked of us by UNTAET. We did
not want anything of this sort to happen, and together we must
try to overcome it."

At the moment, according to Luhut, steps to overcome the problem
are currently being taken by Indonesian security forces, both
the Police and the army. At the same time, the dismantling of
refugee camps, said Luhut, is one of the decisions taken by the
government is a cabinet meeting two weeks ago.
