INT`L PRESSURE ON RI NOT LIKELY TO SUCCEED, SAYS OBSERVER

Padang, Sept 14 (ANTARA) - International presure on Indonesia in
connection with the tragedy in Atambua will never succeed and
may only result in a strengthening of Asean and Islamic
countries` solidarity, according to an economic and political
observer here.

"I think an international conspiracy like this will never
succeed as it is not based on the principles of justice, truth
and mutual respect (for each other`s sovereignty and
independence)," said Efrizal Syofyan, an economic and political
observer at the Padang-based Bung Hatta University, in an
interview here Wednesday.

If Indonesia has strong self-confidence in the face of the
pressure, including the threat of isolation, from the United
States, the anti-Indonesian movement in international forums
will never work.

Asean and Islamic states which have so far been acting as
"outside onlookers" had the chance to improve their solidarity
in responding to international pressure on the largest
predominantly Moslem country (Indonesia) in the world, as the
geo-political existence of Indonesia would also affect them.

According to him, the Indonesian government must be firm in
rejecting the UN plan to send an investigative mission to
Atambua and a resolution issued by the UN Security Council
demanding that Indonesia disarm and disband pro-Jakarta East
Timorese militias.

"The UN resolution is not rational and it could only be used as
a pretext to corner Indonesia," he said.

"Indonesia must have a strong stance. Signals to that effect
have been given by Vice President Megawati in her capacity as
the head of government who turned down the presence of UN
investigators in Atambua," he said.

He further added that Indonesia is currently grappling with
various economic and political problems. Admittedly, the country
was therefore vulnerable to infiltration and intervention either
conducted directly or indirectly.

"However, such foreign pressure and blame addressed to Indonesia
will encourange the emergence of new awareness of the Indonesian
community which is currently on the brink of disintegration to
form a new spirit in the face of foreign pressure," he cited.
He was of the opinion that international pressure on Indonesia
was only a small part of certain countries` scanario to maintain
their hegemony over Indonesian territory in their effort to
achieve their territorial, political and economic ambitions.
