For a different approach:  check out 'SideCar', a product from
'Project Mandarin'.  A brief description is available as one of the
items at <http://www.mandarin.org/PMI_Catalog/Security.html>.
The SideCar document is unfortunately in PDF (no accounting for taste).

The SideCar concept seems pretty good to me, and I've been told it has
some advantages over SSL.
