"Absolute" requirement? No. Your clients should certainly be able to run
without it being a separate partition, regardless of the vendor. But I don't
think there are too many here on this list or at Transarc who would recommend
it.
As I understand it, a client's afs daemon will blindly assume that the size of
the cache configured in it's cacheinfo file is guaranteed to be there for its
use (which is hard to guarantee if the partition where "/afs/cache" [sic] lives
is shared by other disk-space-consuming processes).
Our initial AFS cell installation included clients with shared cache
partitions, and for the most part we've luckily dodged the proverbial bullet,
but (seasoned veterans that we are now <g>) we're converting to dedicated cache
partitions as we upgrade O/Ses on these same clients.
