We see this 'server paused or restarted' with patch 7, could also be an
artifact from that nobody here installed patch 6.

It always happened when traversing a mount point to a frequently-released
R/O volume. What I have personally seen is that when this happens there
is equally a good chance of the afsd_service process looping 100% CPU.

In any case wed've opened a call with Transarc on this. The problems
that we saw fit well with

Transarc Defect: 10123
Description: AFS daemon hangs or users lose tokens for no apparent
reason. A trace shows that AFS was getting into an
                infinite loop doing FetchStatus RPC's.

Transarc Defect: 10174
Description: The NT client is ignoring VLSF_DONTUSE in VLDB
entries, so it is going to out-of-date servers. In
addition to causing the client to get out-of-date
information, this can also cause it to hang, when the
DV it has for a file is later than the DV it gets
                from the server.

Should be fixed in patch level 8 - was due out this week but yesterday I
was told it got delayed because of an additional fix.

I should add (concerning the original question): I'd also like to see a
better integration with the NT4 shell, not just the NT 3.51 file manager.
However, besides the above mentioned problems I have seen no problem
using the NT4 shell.

Since you mention explorer crashes, however: on my NT4 machine when I invoke
the control panel via the sequence 'start/settings/control panel' and then
press the 'up one level' button ('toolbar on') the upper level ('my
computer') is displayed for about 2 seconds and then the explorer
re-initializes. This does not happen when I unmount AFS.
