Sorry.  I should have specified.

The server is an RS6000 530 running AIX 3.2.5 _with_ the magic AIX
filesystem PTF which avoids the 'roached superblock' problem (and,
incidentally, breaks so many other things that I can't install it
on anything but our AFS servers).

We are using AFS 3.3 (no 'a').
