Phil,
Be careful what you wish for.
I suggest that you experiment with NFS "hard,intr" for a while first.
We found that if a keyboard command caused a shell (csh) to search
through a "cdpath", elements of which were on a server which was
unavailable, the shell would hang uninterruptibly. This was
debilitating enough for us to switch to "soft".
I hope I remembered this correctly. It was a long time ago.
